A very exciting project has started on site!

We are doing a full top to toe, back to brick renovation of an amazing penthouse duplex in Bermondsey, including adding a large glazed floor and void connecting the 2 floors, and a small, secret sauna.

The demolition stage of the project is well underway, having removed a warren of existing hallways. It is this open, light, spacious feeling with breathtaking views across central London that we have embraced with the new layout.

We can’t wait to show you more as the construction phase progresses. Watch this space!

We are very pleased to share that, with the help of our brilliant planning consultants @hatton_planning, we have received planning consent for this 3 storey extension to a beautiful converted farriers building in Nunhead.

The extension replaces a poor quality glazed link with a more sustainable, better planned extension, providing the home with an extra bedroom, home office, utility room, WC and new entrance lobby.

The extension is clad with green corrugated zinc panels that reference the industrial nature of the building and the green details of the existing buildings.

We can’t wait to get cracking with the detailed design!

Beautiful reclaimed terracotta tiles being installed in a new courtyard garden. We have also designed a bespoke galvanised steel planter to line the courtyard with shrubs + flowers, which will pop against the terracotta.

Another exciting project has just been submitted to the planning department!

It is a 3 storey extension to a beautiful industrial building that has been converted into residential homes. We are proposing to replace an existing poor quality glazed link with a more sustainable and better planned extension, providing the home with an extra bedroom, home office, utility room and WC.

We worked through a few options for the cladding by producing these visualisations. Pictured are:

Option 1 — corrugated black zinc
Option 2 — rusted Corten steel
Option 3 — corrugated green zinc

A sneak peek inside Blenheim Grove — the new staircase.

The previous stair was narrow and solid, blocking a lot of the light down to the ground floor. We have designed a ‘floating’ stair which has steel plates welded to the stringer, which is concealed behind the plaster. Timber treads have been added to the plates to give the stair a softer feel and to add texture and colour to the space.

We removed the ceiling above the stair on the first floor, exposing the pitched roof, and added a large rooflight to flood the area with light.

The hoarding has been taken down at Blenheim Grove, and the last few touches are being made to the front garden. A pyracantha hedge will be planted to provide privacy, and the plant beds will be filled.

We’ve added another project to the website!

Lyndhurst Grove SE15

A renovation of the lower ground floor level and rear garden with two main aims – to better connect the garden and house, and to create a kitchen and dining room fit for a client in the food industry.

The lower ground floor of this beautiful Victorian house is a semi basement, so it suffered from small windows and no connection to the rear garden. Both the kitchen and dining spaces are housed here, and with a client with a career in the food industry, it was imperative that they became light, bright spaces to be enjoyed.

This was achieved by adding a sunken courtyard adjacent to the kitchen, with large floor to ceiling steel framed doors, washing the kitchen with sunlight, and creating a link from the lower ground level to the rear garden. The courtyard, external kitchen and steps up to the garden were constructed with pale bricks in order to reflect in as much natural daylight as possible.

The existing, impenetrable, internal staircase down to the lower ground floor was replaced with an oak stair with open risers, and the solid dining room doors were replaced with glazed doors, introducing natural light to the centre of the floor plan.

A material palette of light colours and natural textures was selected for the kitchen. Light colours draw the daylight through the space, and natural materials establish a visual link with the external landscaping, creating a seamless threshold between the inside and out.

I have had headshots done by the brilliant @the_studio22 , so I thought this would be a good time to say hi.

Hi! I’m Sarah, the founder of studio on the rye. I am a life-long resident of Peckham, and a proud member of a family full of architects, of which I’m (part of) the fourth practicing generation.

In the years prior to forming studio on the rye I worked at a number of award-winning architecture and design practices including Heatherwick Studio, Wilkinson Eyre and Nissen Richards Studio. Over a period of twelve years, I gained experience across a wide range of projects from small-scale art installations to large mixed-use developments.

While I enjoyed working for larger studios, I found that I thrive on the close relationships and holistic approaches of smaller-scale projects.

So in 2016 I set up studio on the rye, an architecture and design studio specialising in extensions, renovations, loft conversions, new build houses and interiors. Check out our website (link in bio) for a few examples of these.

The Corten steel cladding panels have arrived on s

The Corten steel cladding panels have arrived on site at Blenheim Grove and the textures and colours are varied, interesting and beautiful!

Corten is a steel alloy which was developed to eliminate the need for painting. The metal rusts with exposure to alternating wet and dry weather conditions, developing a patina layer which protects it from further corrosion, requiring little to no maintenance. Over years it develops from silver to dark brown in colour.

At Blenheim Grove we are adding a 2 storey side extension to the existing red brick house, which is in a conservation area. We wanted the cladding to be rusty when it was installed so that it was in keeping with the surrounding context. We therefore pre rusted it using Corten steel accelerator, speeding up the rusting process from silver to bright orange in a couple of days.

A challenge with Corten steel is that as it rusts, the rainwater that runs off it can stain the surround finishes. To avoid staining the concrete floor tiles that will sit below we have used Corten sealer which stops the Corten from rusting further.

We are very proud to present the first of the photos of Lyndhurst Grove, where we renovated the lower ground level of a beautiful 4 storey Victorian terraced house.

The lower ground floor was a semi basement, so suffered from small windows and no connection to the rear garden. The kitchen and dining spaces were to be retained here, and with a client with a career in the food industry, it was imperative that they became light, bright spaces to be enjoyed.

We constructed the courtyard, steps up to the garden and external kitchen with pale bricks in order to reflect in as much natural daylight as possible.

We have been doing some tests and samples of the natural weathering and rusting of Corten steel.

Corten is a steel alloy which was developed to eliminate the need for painting. The metal rusts with exposure to alternating wet and dry weather conditions, developing a patina layer which protects it from further corrosion, therefore requiring little or no maintenance.

Over years it will develop from a silver to a dark brown colour. These images are a sample that has been naturally weathering over the course of 5 months.

We will be using Corten steel to clad our two storey side extension in Peckham. The existing house is red brick, so we are looking to pause the weathering process at a mid red / brown stage with the use of a sealant.

We are looking forward to producing more tests and samples over the next month, the weathering of the cladding sheets themselves, and the installation of them in the new year!

We have removed the ceiling in the stairwell of this post war house in Peckham, and it has transformed from a low, dark hallway to a light, bright uplifting space.

It has also uncovered the dual pitch roof from, which has been heavily insulated to make the building more energy efficient.

The new bespoke staircase has begun being installed at Blenheim Grove!

The previous stair was narrow and solid, blocking all light to the ground floor hallway.

We have designed a ‘floating’ stair with steel plates welded to the steel stringer (that will be concealed behind the wall finish). Timber treads will be fixed to the plates, leaving a gap between the treads and the wall, creating the floating aesthetic.

We have also added a large rooflight above the stair so that light floods between the treads.

As a studio we offer a full architectural service throughout the project, from establishing the project brief together to issuing the final certificates at the end of the construction period.

Overseeing the construction period means that we can design solutions to any unforeseen elements that crop up during the build, help manage the involvement of the wider project team, and keep an eye on quality control, ensuring that what is built is as per the designs and specifications.

We also really enjoy visiting site, seeing our ideas take shape, watching our clients’ dream spaces become a reality, and really understanding every layer of the construction. So it’s not a completely selfless act.

Giardini Della Biennale is the original site of the La Biennale, opening in 1895. It now holds 29 permanent pavilions which host different installations each year. This year was architettura.
