I am very proud to be the third generation of female architects in my family:⠀

1. My grandmother, Magda Borowiecka, in front of Southwyck House (otherwise known as The Barrier Block), her most famous post war housing block in Brixton, and the inspiration for the graphics of @brixtonbrewery ‘s coldharbour lager and the Brixton pound note. Magda keeps on trending on socials, much to her surprise!

2. My mum, Elizabeth Borowiecka, who has run her own practice for over 40 years and is still going strong.⠀

On site at The Jam Factory — where we are doing

On site at The Jam Factory — where we are doing a full top to toe renovation of this amazing duplex penthouse, including adding a large glazed floor and void connecting the 2 floors, and a small, secret sauna.

The demolition stage of the project is complete, having removed a warren of existing hallways. It is this open, light, spacious feeling with breathtaking views across central London that we have embraced with the new layout.

We can’t wait to show you more as the construction phase progresses. Watch this space!

We’re excited to share another image from our garden studio project in Hackney.

Pictured is the large bespoke rooflight that is located in the back corner of the studio, offering views of the tree canopy above while flooding the home office below with natural light.

The studio’s geometry is defined by the unique, irregular shape of the site, resulting in a vaulted ceiling, that folds across the site.

We chose birch faced plywood for the wall linings above dado level as it is a durable finish that adds warmth and texture to the room.

We are very proud to present the first of the fina

We are very proud to present the first of the final photos of our garden studio project in Hackney (which completed a while ago, but we haven’t had the chance to post it!).

This is the third project with the same, lovely clients. We have completed a rear extension, loft conversion and house renovation with them previously, and over the last 10 years (!) have now touched every room in the house (and garden). With an increased need for home working, they approached us to design a home office to fit snugly at the end of their garden, which had an irregular shaped rear boundary line.

There is a large bespoke rooflight in the back corner to take advantage of the view up into the trees, and a full wall of south facing glazing, providing views of the beautiful garden.

Stained timber slats have been added in front of the large south facing window so that computer screens can still be seen.

Exposed concrete has been used to form the floors, walls, external bench and internal desk.

We really appreciate getting feedback about our projects, and Peter’s was a particularly special one.

His ancestors lived in a Victorian house which was destroyed during the Second World War. It was located in what is now the garden of Rusty House on the Rye.

We are really pleased that Peter thinks we have done the site justice.

We have had a few new followers recently, and it has been a long time since I’ve shown my face here, so I thought I’d say hi!

Hi! I’m Sarah, the founder + director of studio on the rye. I am a life-long resident of Peckham, and a proud member of a family of architects, of which I’m (part of) the fourth practicing generation.

In the years prior to forming studio on the rye I worked at a number of award-winning architecture and design practices including Heatherwick Studio, Wilkinson Eyre and Nissen Richards Studio. Over a period of twelve years, I gained experience across a wide range of projects from small-scale art installations to large mixed-use developments.

While I enjoyed working for larger studios, I found that I thrive on the close relationships and holistic approaches of smaller-scale projects.

So in 2016 I set up studio on the rye, an architecture and design studio specialising in extensions, renovations, loft conversions, new build houses and interiors.

The previous stair was narrow and solid, blocking a lot of the light down to the ground floor and making the space feel small and cramped. We have designed a ‘floating’ stair which has powder coated steel plates welded to the stringer which is concealed behind in the plastered wall. Timber treads have been added to the plates to give the stair a softer feel and to add texture and warmth to the space.

To continue our tour of Rusty House on the Rye, we go through to the entrance hallway with steel + oak staircase.

The previous stair was narrow and solid, blocking a lot of the light down to the ground floor and making the space feel small and cramped. We have designed a ‘floating’ stair which has steel plates welded to the stringer which is concealed behind in the plastered wall. Timber treads have been added to the plates to give the stair a softer feel and to add texture and warmth to the space.

We removed the ceiling above the stair on the first floor, exposing the existing pitched roof, and added a large rooflight to flood the area with light.
