Through to the home office + snug living room, wit

Through to the home office + snug living room, with bespoke ash joinery.

The existing house had a disproportionally long living room, which we divided up into a home office and snug living room. We added double sliding pocket doors between the 2 rooms to add flexibility to the spaces.

Ash joinery was designed for the home office to provide necessary storage, to add warmth and texture to the space and to tie in with the other ash elements throughout the house — the kitchen, joinery and window + door reveals.

A key design consideration was how to connect the house more effectively with the rear garden, compensating for the loss of some side garden space. Large thin frame sliding doors, a glazed corner in the kitchen, expansive windows and polished concrete tiles in both the kitchen and garden were introduced to create a seamless transition between the interior and the garden, allowing the outdoors to feel like an extension of the home.

The next of the final photos of Rusty House on the Rye — in to the kitchen / dining space.

The aesthetic goal for the interiors was to create a simple, calm atmosphere using natural materials to add warmth and texture. Ash window surrounds, bespoke joinery and concrete tiles were used to create a minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired interior. Natural daylight was a key element, with large areas of glazing throughout.

Pictured is the bespoke ash kitchen, which was designed by us and constructed by the joiner — Woodsgift. We designed units with an open frame structure, with no cover panels or plinths, so that they felt lightweight in the space, and like crafted pieces of furniture. The corners of the drawers are fixed with finger joints, embracing the simplicity of being able to see how things have been put together.

One of our client's favourite elements of the house is the horizontal slot kitchen window, where she can watch Peckham go by, but it is just high enough that no one is looking back at her.

Our client wanted to add a two-storey extension while maintaining side access from the front garden into the rear. The rear garden was a standout feature and important to the project.

A key design consideration was how to connect the house more effectively with the rear garden, compensating for the loss of some side garden space. Large thin frame sliding doors, a glazed corner in the kitchen, expansive windows and polished concrete tiles in both the kitchen and garden were introduced to create a seamless transition between the interior and the garden, allowing the outdoors to feel like an extension of the home.

The glazed corners in the kitchen and master bedroom required bespoke glass due to the unusual angle of the side elevation, which was dictated by the boundary line of the property.

The next of the final photos of Rusty House on the Rye — we will walk you around + through the house over the next few days.

Rusty House on the Rye is a 1950s property located in the Holly Grove Conservation Area of Peckham. We renovated and extended the house — updating the thermal efficiency of the existing house, and providing a new kitchen / dining space, utility room, office, snug and master bedroom suite.

After 12 years of living in the house, the owner was keen to extend and improve it rather than moving. The existing house needed updating, including resolving damp and ventilation issues, and upgrading the building fabric to be more energy-efficient.

Our approach was to design an extension that would sit well with the surrounding Conservation Area and the host terrace without resorting to pastiche. The design also focused on simple, monolithic forms. Recessed gutters and a shadow gap in both the walls and roof helped delineate the extension from the original house while maintaining a clean and modern aesthetic.

Weathered Corten steel cladding was chosen to complement the tone of the house's red brick, and for its durable and sustainable qualities. The steel's patina, which develops a rusty, brown colour over time, was accelerated to create the desired look upon installation.

Additional insulation and triple-glazed windows were added to enhance the existing house’s thermal performance. The materials throughout the house were carefully sourced, with a focus on UK-based suppliers.

The house is on a prominent site, and forms a landmark between Peckham’s buzzing Rye Lane and Bellenden Road. Rusty House on the Rye represents more than just a design project to us — it is a meaningful contribution to our community and a visible, lasting addition to the neighbourhood.

A very exciting project has started on site! We

A very exciting project has started on site!

We are doing a full top to toe, back to brick renovation of an amazing penthouse duplex in Bermondsey, including adding a large glazed floor and void connecting the 2 floors, and a small, secret sauna.

The demolition stage of the project is well underway, having removed a warren of existing hallways. It is this open, light, spacious feeling with breathtaking views across central London that we have embraced with the new layout.

We are very pleased to share that, with the help of our brilliant planning consultants @hatton_planning, we have received planning consent for this 3 storey extension to a beautiful converted farriers building in Nunhead.

The extension replaces a poor quality glazed link with a more sustainable, better planned extension, providing the home with an extra bedroom, home office, utility room, WC and new entrance lobby.

The extension is clad with green corrugated zinc panels that reference the industrial nature of the building and the green details of the existing buildings.

We can’t wait to get cracking with the detailed design!

Another exciting project has just been submitted to the planning department!

It is a 3 storey extension to a beautiful industrial building that has been converted into residential homes. We are proposing to replace an existing poor quality glazed link with a more sustainable and better planned extension, providing the home with an extra bedroom, home office, utility room and WC.

We worked through a few options for the cladding by producing these visualisations. Pictured are:

A sneak peek inside Blenheim Grove — the new staircase.

The previous stair was narrow and solid, blocking a lot of the light down to the ground floor. We have designed a ‘floating’ stair which has steel plates welded to the stringer, which is concealed behind the plaster. Timber treads have been added to the plates to give the stair a softer feel and to add texture and colour to the space.

We removed the ceiling above the stair on the first floor, exposing the pitched roof, and added a large rooflight to flood the area with light.

We’ve added another project to the website!

Lyndhurst Grove SE15

A renovation of the lower ground floor level and rear garden with two main aims – to better connect the garden and house, and to create a kitchen and dining room fit for a client in the food industry.

The lower ground floor of this beautiful Victorian house is a semi basement, so it suffered from small windows and no connection to the rear garden. Both the kitchen and dining spaces are housed here, and with a client with a career in the food industry, it was imperative that they became light, bright spaces to be enjoyed.

This was achieved by adding a sunken courtyard adjacent to the kitchen, with large floor to ceiling steel framed doors, washing the kitchen with sunlight, and creating a link from the lower ground level to the rear garden. The courtyard, external kitchen and steps up to the garden were constructed with pale bricks in order to reflect in as much natural daylight as possible.

The existing, impenetrable, internal staircase down to the lower ground floor was replaced with an oak stair with open risers, and the solid dining room doors were replaced with glazed doors, introducing natural light to the centre of the floor plan.

A material palette of light colours and natural textures was selected for the kitchen. Light colours draw the daylight through the space, and natural materials establish a visual link with the external landscaping, creating a seamless threshold between the inside and out.

I have had headshots done by the brilliant @the_studio22 , so I thought this would be a good time to say hi.

Hi! I’m Sarah, the founder of studio on the rye. I am a life-long resident of Peckham, and a proud member of a family full of architects, of which I’m (part of) the fourth practicing generation.

In the years prior to forming studio on the rye I worked at a number of award-winning architecture and design practices including Heatherwick Studio, Wilkinson Eyre and Nissen Richards Studio. Over a period of twelve years, I gained experience across a wide range of projects from small-scale art installations to large mixed-use developments.

While I enjoyed working for larger studios, I found that I thrive on the close relationships and holistic approaches of smaller-scale projects.

So in 2016 I set up studio on the rye, an architecture and design studio specialising in extensions, renovations, loft conversions, new build houses and interiors. Check out our website (link in bio) for a few examples of these.

The Corten steel cladding panels have arrived on s

The Corten steel cladding panels have arrived on site at Blenheim Grove and the textures and colours are varied, interesting and beautiful!

Corten is a steel alloy which was developed to eliminate the need for painting. The metal rusts with exposure to alternating wet and dry weather conditions, developing a patina layer which protects it from further corrosion, requiring little to no maintenance. Over years it develops from silver to dark brown in colour.

At Blenheim Grove we are adding a 2 storey side extension to the existing red brick house, which is in a conservation area. We wanted the cladding to be rusty when it was installed so that it was in keeping with the surrounding context. We therefore pre rusted it using Corten steel accelerator, speeding up the rusting process from silver to bright orange in a couple of days.

A challenge with Corten steel is that as it rusts, the rainwater that runs off it can stain the surround finishes. To avoid staining the concrete floor tiles that will sit below we have used Corten sealer which stops the Corten from rusting further.
