The ground floor of this early 20th century home has been extended and the landscaping redesigned to create new family spaces.

A large rooflight was also incorporated to draw natural light to the central rooms of the existing house.

The bricks used for the extension and external landscaping were selected to complement the existing brick plinth of the main house, with  recessed horizontal mortar joints to create a more contemporary aesthetic.

The communication between the house and the garden was an important aspect of this project. The rear garden had a steep gradient sloping down from the house, resulting in very little relationship between the inside and outside.

This relationship was strengthened with the incorporation of a glazed corner between the dining room and the high level terrace, large bifold doors, and high level slot windows to open up the home to the garden and provide views of the garden through the house.

The clients were a growing family whose home had a kitchen that was narrow, dark and disconnected from the dining room. They wanted a space that the family could enjoy together, that opened out to the rear garden.
